Discover local-approved things to do in downtown Grand Rapids. From coffee shops to golf and dinner spots, the Launch Kit team shares their favorite city picks.
When building Launch Kit, it was important for us to have a real physical presence in the city. We wanted to be rooted in the community we serve. On the work side, that allows us to better understand the nuances of each market and ultimately be more effective for our clients. On the personal side, it means we get to spend our time in a thriving, creative city. With our office located centrally in downtown Grand Rapids, we get to stay in the loop on all the local events, businesses, and hidden gems.
As Grand Rapids locals, we wanted to put together a list of our favorite activities, restaurants, and hangouts across the city.
I asked a few Launch Kit team members to pitch in and help make this guide as well-rounded as possible. So whether you’re visiting town or just looking for something new to do this weekend, here’s what we recommend.
Kevin Kamis – My heart is with Madcap Coffee. It’s not for everybody, but for me, I appreciate how seriously they take their craft. Follow them on social and you’ll see them visiting farmers across the globe, hosting cupping competitions, and ranking nationally for their roasts.
Rachel – My husband and I love walking around the west side. A couple of our go-to spots are The Bitter End and Rise Authentic Baking Co.

Kevin – Our weekday lunch favorites right now are Ski’s Sub Shop, Jimmy John’s, and Poke Toke. For a deeper breakdown, check out our full article on the Best Lunch Spots in Grand Rapids.
Kevin – If it’s a Saturday, I’m probably golfing. I've got two course recommendations for you:
We’ve got an entire write-up comparing Grand Rapids golf courses.
Daniel – When the waves are right, surfing in Grand Haven is the move. It’s rare in the summer but still worth checking out. As someone who grew up in Grand Haven, here are a few local pro tips:
Reagan – Michigan Street and Bridge Street are always solid choices. You can park once and hit a few spots all in the same night.
Rachel – We’ve got two dogs, so we’re always looking for pet-friendly patios. The Mitten Brewing Co. has a great dog-friendly space, and Blue Dog Tavern just opened up a new outdoor courtyard that’s pet-friendly too. We haven’t been yet but it’s on the list. For happy hour, Butcher’s Union is top tier. Check their Instagram for hours and specials.
We break this all down further in our article on Best Dinner Spots in Grand Rapids.
Kevin – I’m not a huge shopper, but my girlfriend is, and I’ll admit the local shops on Cherry Street and Wealthy Street are impressive. They’ve got everything from plants and candles to outdoor gear and home goods.
After shopping, our favorite spots to grab dinner in that area are Donkey Taqueria or Zivio, and save room for ice cream at Furniture City Creamery.
Kevin – I’m an avid runner, Reeds Lake is my go-to spot. The loop is about five miles and the atmosphere is incredible. Think people walking dogs, cyclists, runners, and families – it feels like a Hallmark movie in the best way. If you're up for a longer run (around 10 miles), start downtown, head to Reeds Lake, do the loop, and run back.
Daniel – I like running the White Pine Trail. You get that mix of trees, bikers, and nature. One of my favorite routes is from Belmont to Rockford and back – about 10 miles. If I was on a bike, I'd stop in Rockford for a bite and a beer before heading back.
Also, for a more relaxed walk, check out the trails near Robinette’s Apple Haus. It’s a low-key scenic walk and you can reward yourself with ice cream afterward.
Mackenzie – I second Reeds Lake. I love running there, but also love relaxing at the park near Rose’s Restaurant and the boat house. My friends and I are actually going there tonight for a picnic dinner.
Kevin – One of my favorite simple nights is dinner and a movie downtown. Celebration Cinema Studio Park makes for a perfect evening. Grab dinner nearby, then walk to the movie. We talk more about this idea in our Ideal Evening Downtown Grand Rapids Guide
Mackenzie – If you’ve got a group of 4–6 people, check out House Rules downtown. It’s a board game bar with a game fee that gets you access to a huge selection of games. Definitely make a reservation. You can get snacks and drinks, then hang out and play whatever games you want.
